A Traveller's Guide to Coober Pedy Opals
A Traveller's Guide to Coober Pedy Opals
Deep in the South Australian outback, roughly 850 kilometres north of Adelaide, lies one of the most extraordinary towns on earth. Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world — a sun-scorched, underground-dwelling community that produces more than 80% of the world's precious opal. If you've ever been captivated by the shifting colours of an opal, there's a good chance it came from here.
What Makes Coober Pedy Opals Special?
Opal is Australia's national gemstone, and Coober Pedy is where the finest specimens are found. The town's name comes from the Aboriginal phrase kupa piti, meaning "white man's hole in the ground" — a nod to the thousands of mine shafts that dot the landscape.
What makes Coober Pedy opal so prized is its play of colour — the way light diffracts through the silica spheres within the stone to produce flashes of red, green, blue, and gold. No two opals are alike, which is part of what makes them so special as gifts and keepsakes.
There are three main types of opal you'll encounter:
- Solid opal — a single piece of natural opal, the most valuable type.
- Doublet opal — a thin slice of opal bonded to a dark backing to enhance colour.
- Triplet opal — a doublet with a clear protective cap on top, making it more durable and affordable.
Visiting Coober Pedy
Coober Pedy is unlike anywhere else in Australia. Because of the extreme heat (summer temperatures regularly exceed 45°C), many residents live underground in "dugouts" — homes carved directly into the hillside. There are underground churches, hotels, and even a catacomb-style museum.
The surrounding landscape is equally dramatic. The Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, just north of town, offers a surreal moonscape of coloured mesas and eroded hills that has served as a backdrop for films including Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Pitch Black.
